Passkeys are a more secure and convenient alternative to passwords.

However, getting users to adopt passkeys can introduce friction.

Automatic passkey upgrades solve this by automatically upgrading users to passkeys when they log in with a password to your application.

This feature is currently only supported in Safari macOS 15+ and iOS 18+ or Chrome 136+ on desktop.

To test automatic passkey upgrades, use the following steps:

Make sure you have enabled automatic passkey upgrades.
Register a new account and save it in your password manager e.g. Apple Passwords or Google Password Manager.
Log in to your account with password autofill from your password manager.
A passkey should be automatically created after logging in.
Log out and log in again using passkey autofill.

To enable automatic passkey upgrades, you must meet the following requirements:

Safari on macOS 15+ or iOS 18+
Make sure you have Apple's Passwords app, and have enabled automatic passkey upgrades.macOS:iOS:
Chrome 136+ on desktop
Ensure you have enabled automatic passkey upgrades at chrome://password-manager/settings.
